Thierry Aufret, great amateur of cars “Avions Voisin” and author of a website dedicated to these cars, send us interesting pictures of a Bugatti type 40 bodied by Poinsenet in Magenta-Epernay (east of France) in 1927. This body, not really beautiful, is quite similar to some dated 1927 in east of France ?
More details about this Bugatti Poinsenet on Thierry’s website in english :

Luckily, this is an other Bugatti bodied by Poinsenet, with a more elegant style, and that could be an other type 40. This very nice picture was sent by Mr Dumelié of the Centre Régional de la Photographie de Champagne-Ardenne. He found and saved the archives of Mr Poyet who was a photographer in Epernay. Who knows more about this Bugatti and about this coachworker who seemed to appreciate the Bugattis ? Contact : webmaster@club-bugatti-france.net

This is a very nice photo of a Type 38 torpedo Lavocat et Marsaud 1927. It was taken in 1930 on the beach of Saint Cast (Côtes d’Armor, France). The driver is Mr Gustave Petit, his wife is on his left side. Several samples of T38 were bodied by Lavocat et Marsaud, some are today in USA, but it seems that they are not this particular car. Did anyone have information about this superb torpedo ?

2 february 2007  - History of #40347
One of our Members bought a Type 40 Grand Sport chassis #40347, engine #406. What he knows about this Bugatti : bought just after the WW2 by the father of his seller, it was re-registered in the new French system near 1964, 482 JL 60. Our friend bought it in december 2004, he is searching for the other owners and he wish for sure to find some photos of the time. This Bugatti has two particularities : - the engine is equiped with double ignition system (two plugs per cylinder), - brakes are of the larger size from the later cars.

I can give a first answer to this research : found in the “archives départementales des cartes grises”, #40347 was registered on july 5 1930 in the French department of Seine et Oise, 4375-YA4, to the name of a Mr Georges Hadamar, 8 avenue de la gare in Vernouillet (thanks to Claude Schneider). After the book Type 40 by Price/Arbey, it was delivered in february 1927.

8 december 2005  - Williams in Ouganda ?
I am currently living in Uganda and in my spare time am looking to see if I can find any trace of "Georges Tambal" who moved in with Eve Aubecq, the widow of Charles Grover-Williams, in 1948. He had apparently come via the USA from Uganda, where he had trapped wild animals for sale to zoos in  Europe depleted by years of war. Although officially Williams died in Sachsenhausen in March 1945, some people believe that "Tambal" was in fact Williams. I know Williams had a married sister in Uganda, but don't know her married name. Can anyone help, or provide any further information which might  help me search for "Tambal" here ? Thanks for e-mailing twisden@aol.co

I am the grand-son of René Meuroux who lived in Auffargis (Yvelines department, France) when he bought just after the WWII the Bugatti that was previously owned by Madame Thérèse Lethias (born Mouillot), deceased in German camps. I only know that this Bugatti was a drophead. If you know something about this Bugatti and its history ? Thanks for contact me by e-mail

As a retirement project I have prepared a register of Bugatti  Personalities. It already has approaching 3,000 entries - owners, drivers,  mechanics, Molshiem workers, Bugatti family members, etc. from Abecassis, Abry,  Adam, Adams, Adenwalla, Adnams, Agg, Albanese ... to ... Zanelli, Zanni, Zehender, Zenica, Zeuner, Zimmerman, Zipper and Zirn. I am still working on it but would like to finalise the entries and publish  the first edition in June 2006. In the meantime I am looking for more and more  information.
I would like to hear from anyone who can provide information for publication. Anyone contributing will be fully acknowledged in the book and be offered from 10 to 40% discount on the price of the completed book depending on the  amount of help given. Look forward to hearing from you. Graham Little in UK, tel. + 44 1978 869342 or e-mail

Bugatti Type 23 Brescia chassis #2442, engine #1035. That car was invoiced by Molsheim on 3rd September 1925 to Bertrand y Serra, Barcelona. When I bought this car in 1998 from Mr Ramouna in Bordeaux, it was registered 5061 JL 33. He acquired 2442 ca. 1998 from the collection “Autos de Jadis”, Mr Branayre, in T13 configuration. In the early 70’s, before Autos de Jadis, 2442 was known to belong to Mr Prieur of Palaiseau, then still in the original T23 form.
Does anybody have any recollection of Prieur and his ownership of this T23 ? Any photographs showing bodywork ? Any information about 2442, also prior to and after Mr Prieur is very welcome. Any language acceptable, even Danish ...

I am searching information about the driver from Lyon (France) named Rousselet (Jean or Marcel ?) who participated in 1927 with a Type 35 to the Hillclimb of Planfoy, near Saint Etienne, probably registered 6111 S 3. The winner was Louis Chiron. Rousselet owned in 1933 a Type 37A that he lented to the driver Pierre Rey for finishing the race season. Thanks in advance.

I am searching for information about the history of my Type 37 châssis #37190. It was delivered new in Marseille (France) to Mr R. Destournée, 44 avenue de la Cadenelle. Second owner was Mr Robert Parker in Marseille, who was an airline pilot with Latecoere or Air Union, and who raced with the 37. Registration was 1727 CA 1. He won the Hill climb of Equilles on 17th July 1927, maybe with the 37 even if records show a Type 35. As the 37 had cast wheels, there was maybe a mistake ? The 4th owner was Mr Edouard Maifret from Nice, registration 5276 BA 7. I was in contact with him and he gave me thses two pictures. I am searching for the address of Mr Parker, if he is always alive, and for the other owners of 37190. Thanks in advance for your help, as I am in USA !

Hello, I send you these pictures taken in 1937-38. That car was the Bugatti owned by my father, Eugène Dubois, just before WW2. It’s a Type 37A that he drove during some races : Chimay in Belgium, Dieppe … You can notice the little oil cooler added by my father, a fine mechanic, in the aim to decrease the engine temperature which regularly overpassed the normal ratio ! In 1940, as many people living in North of France, we had have to « evacuate ». When coming back home, my father had the unpleasant surprise to find his Bugatti very damaged. At this time life was very hard and he had to sold his Bugatti to somebody, it seems to me from Lille (France). I would like to know if this Bugatti does exist today, all information are welcome. Many thanks in advance and I hope to read you soon. New information : - that car had a French registration : 3683 MB9, - it finished 6st of GP des Provinces in Chimay (Belgium) on June 9th 1935.

My name is Mark Falconer-Atlee, I am trying to trace history of my late father’s racing history if at all possible, he was a Bugatti racing driver back in the 1930's, I have details of 3 of the races in the south of France that he was in, these are as follows : La Turbie Hill Climb (near Nice) in 1931 which he won, Les Alpilles St-Remy Hill Climb in 1931 which he won and Le Camp Hill Climb (Marseille) also in 1931 which he won. I understand that his racing career was brought to a halt when he hit a tree and was badly injured during a race. I believe that he may have raced under the name of William William, however, the document that I have of his shows the name of Atlee William. I am desperate to find more details, photos etc of his racing history as he died some 20 years ago and I have little knowledge of his achievements, would you have any idea where I could find more information about him ?

Dick Ploeg sent us this very nice photo with the following text : the car on the trailer is a “Monnier-Speciale”, built by Maurice Monnier. Maurice Monnier was born 1920 in Gamaches (Somme) and by the time he built and raced his specials was a garagist dealing in second hand cars. The special on the trailer behind this T57 Ventoux is Monnier's second production, which had a BMW 328 engine with a cylinderhead and camshaft from a Bristol. It also is the second version of his second special, after he put on a new bodywork in 1950. The car on the trailer is also in its pre-1953/54 execution, when it had a darker colour. It was raced in this form in the 1950, 1953 and 1954 GP's des Frontieres at Chimay in Belgium. Maurice Monnier formed the "Ecurie Flandres" with the other Frenchmen Georges Mulnard and Pierre Bastien, who both also raced the Monnier-Speciale at Chimay. Eventually Monnier sold his special to Pierre Bastien, who turned it into a sportscar for participation in the 1955 GP des Frontieres. The foto thus can be dated as between 1950 and 1953, while possibly it shows Maurice Monnier on his way to the 1950 GP des Frontieres.
Would you have any idea what the chassis number of this Type 57 may have been et where is it today ? And also where is this Monnier Special today ?

I am researching the early history of Type 57 Ventoux coach #57271 which was sold via agent Groslambert to M. St Martin 25 April 1935. The car was imported to UK by a French diplomat and sold by him to K. Bear in 1946, since when it has remained in UK and Holland and it's history is well known. Can anyone tell me where agent Groslambert (who supplied about 10 Type 57 cars) was located in France ? Does anyone know anything about M. St  Martin ?

Bernhard Simon is searching all pictures or information about the Bugatti T57 #57268 : in course of 1934 there must have been a rising demand from clients for a kind of sporting version of the type 57. The factory did answer with a sensational Roadster at the Paris Show in 1934 with the "Grand Raid Roadster", a two seater roadster with a kind of camel-back headrests and spads over the rear wheels. For realising this car with its driver position more backwards, it was necessary to lower the angle of the steering column and bend the levers to the back and have an extension for the dashboard mounting. These small changes of  the layout of the chassis have been called G.R. specifications. For the customers, it now was possible to fit more sporty coachwork on the chassis and this was accepted by 10 orders of G.R. chassis, all produced in the  first half of 1935. By the factory this layout was used for the production of the new "fx.cabr.” later called "Coupé Atalante". It was more than obvious that this was only a cosmetic change in the layout of the chassis and nothing worth in competition. The demand was: more power, better road holding."
One of these these cars with the shorthand symbol "G.R." after the chassis number was chassis 57.268 G.R. with engine number 215, delivered on 25.5.35 as a chassis to M. Kampmann. I know some French licence numbers: 4920 RJ 8, 5106 YC,3568 RL 8, 1634 NV 5, 395 CK 75 but I could not find a picture of the car and  have no details about the history of the car.

John Staveley is compiling a Register of the 'neglected' touring cars, T38, T40, T44, T49 and  T46. He would like to hear from owners and anyone with interesting stories, details etc. of these cars. He is currently putting much effort into the T44 and would particularly like photographs of these cars. I also want to know of  existing cars - currently I know of over 100 T44s but there are surely more that  I do not know of! He is currently very busy rebuilding  the engine of his car, 44787, and just finished adjusting the valve clearances -  hope to be back on the road by April.
