Bugatti - Gulinelli Type 2

First car entirely conceived by Ettore Bugatti, with the grant of brothers Count Gulinelli in Ferrara and of his father Carlo Bugatti. Built in Ferrara and Milan, technical and industrial environment of which allowed Ettore Bugatti to find easily experimented subcontractors (foundry, general mechanics, etc.). This car was very advanced for this time with a maximum speed of 60 kph. It is with that Type 2 that Ettore Bugatti really launched his career, because it won Grand Prix of the city of Milan in 1901, allowing him to be tracked down and engaged by de Dietrich in Niederbronn ( Alsace). There is regrettably no surviving sample.

Ettore Bugatti at Gulinelli’s property near Ferrara, verifying foundry parts for his Type 2, probably at the end of 1900

Ettore at wheel of his Type 2, photo probably shot at the same location and the same day than previous one. Driving position and practical aspects of this Type 2 were clearly not important elements during the conception ...

Ettore at wheel of his Type 2 decorated with flowers as it was made usually in the time during presentations of elegance or exhibition. Maybe this picture was shot during the presentation of Type 2 at International Motorcars Exhibition in Milan in 1901. A headlamp was added at front.

Ettore at the wheel of his Type 2, on the side of the Riviere di Ponente in Alassio, date unknown but picture probably taken before the previous photos : there are only 2 control levers instead of 3 on the other one. Headlamp was not yet mounted, there is only its support. Note that Alassio is near 185 km south-west of Milan, proving the good road capability of this Type 2 !

A rare photo of Type 2, shot at an unknown date but probably much more late than the previous ones. The persons on the car are not identified, they seem to enjoy a lot driving such an "antiquity". Location is unknown.
